Ajon Kibreab (b. 1981, Bangkok) is an electrical engineer and self-taught filmmaker. His work has been shown in many international film festivals such as Alternative Film/Video Festival, Belgrade 2012 and Thai Short Film Festival 2012.
Concept: “The story of Chalawan (ชาละวัน), the crocodile lord, fascinated me. It shows how Thai people believe that crocodiles and humans can develop relationships. We recreated this crocodile lord on a spirit cloth. The yantra text was improvised by an artist called Syam Yai.”
“My previous short film, Gorgonen, was about a female monster. But for my new work, I am developing a character that is my inspiration. The living room walls is used as a mood-board showing those inspirations: my grand ma’s batik & primitivism art. The bed is dressed with a hand-woven fabric called Pha Sinh (ผ้าซิ่น). For the music, I selected the 1970s vinyl of Kwanjit Sriprajan. Her funkiest sound used to be played in temples across Thailand.“

Neighborhood Guide
This project is named after our district Suthep. Over the past 10 years, many creative minds have moved into this neighborhood. This results in many artist built galleries, craft shops and bohemian cafes. Below are our favorites:
Check out fine art printmaking at Chiang Mai Art On Paper (C.A.P.) Studio. Explore the works of emerging artists at The Bubble Arts Group. This artist’s studio exhibits their works in a loft space. Have a delicious vegetarian lunch at Pun Pun Organic Cafe. They run their own organic farm and host workshops on eco home building. Grab a coffee and enjoy contemporary art at Gallery Seescape.
Other adventures include visiting Baan Kang Wat artist village at the base of Suthep mountain. The place showcases local craftsmanship: woodworks, ceramics and clothes. Right next by is Rumpueng Community Art Space. Check their artist residency. Keen for a joy ride? head to MAIIAM, Chiang Mai’s first contemporary art museum. Permanent works from well known Thai artists. With rotating exhibitions in relation to current events.
